Welcome to the Dawe Elementary Library

"He who teaches children learns more than they do." German Proverb
Here at the Dawe Elementary Library we help to foster each students love of reading. By doing so, instruction is given about how to handle a book, parts of the book and where to locate needed text in the library. Students are encouraged to check out a book each week. This helps students navigate their way through the library as to the literary styles they prefer to read and how the library is designed. Also, the students are exposed to books on CD. We listen to them as a whole group and individually through the newly developed listening center. This type of "reading" allows students to use their imagination, foster good listening skills and support their understanding of story structure. We also have in the library a newly added routine to the library known as, centers. Here the students will work on listening skills and developing patience and understanding of classmates ideas through literacy games.
Our library routine is well defined and outlined for each student to understand on our schedule board as they enter the library each week. First, all library books are due back each library session, we then have a concept book reading followed by an activity, next, the students check out books and finally we have a reading outloud from either one of our grade level author studies, genre studies or core literature.
